But then I'm not that big into actually playing chess. Honestly the most interesting thing about it to me is the fact that I now own Silver and Gold chess pieces that match a set of White and Black. Knights seemed a lot weaker because they start so much farther back, but at the same time they're in a decent position to see action on your flanks so maybe they're not so bad. Having your biggest threats be on your flanks at the start was also an interesting change. The free-for-all version made the game a lot more chaotic. I haven't actually played it in years, but as I recall it did some interesting things. According to the meager rulebook it can be played as a free-for-all or with 2 teams of 2, where your teammate is the player across from you. The pieces are regular chess pieces and set up in the normal arrangement at the back rows of the 4 ends of the cross. The board is a fat cross shape: an 8x8 square grid with 3 additional rows of 8 on each side. It certainly throws out the books of standardized openings. Pieces with more restricted movement do to battle it out in the more congested center. Since the board contains 96 squares, it's effectively 50% more expansive than a conventional chessboard, which creates a big advantage for queens, rooks, and to some extent, bishops. "Castling" isn't nearly as good a defensive option, even when it's possible, since attacks can originate from almost anywhere. That can almost double the movement options of some pieces and keeps the center of the field "the high ground" for development.Īt the same time, the weakest parts of the formation are the pawns on the flanks, so they have to be watched carefully, especially in the simplest version of the game (without catapults or archers since there are fewer intermediate pieces to defend them). Pieces can exit these on either side (or corner in the case of diagonal movers) except the one in which they entered.
